Ranko Damjanovic exhibits unusual talent for word play. Language is not only his poetic tool but also an instrument in "vivisection" of the poet’s mind. His poetry is reflective of the Serbian generation of intellectuals living during turbulent times of the Civil War in ex-Yugoslavia, which they have not caused, only inherited.

For him, poem is a 'dark dot' which remains on paper instead of lyric expression. In his books, he goes an extra-mile to expose the words and what they represent by leading us into a deeper, new layer of language. He masterfully plays with sounds and words, baring their meaning and leading the reader into complex layers of the primeval connotations, enriching them with new associations. He reveals, examines and conquers language not only as poetic material, but also as an attitude towards existence.

Paul Disnard
